Annotation

This article is devoted to an overview of the history of a stone temple construction in honor of the silverless Saints Cosmas and Damian in the village of Borovskoye, belonging to the modern Kostanay region. By the time the first wooden church was built here, these territories were actively populated by Russian settlers — the way of life of the local aborigines was being reformed, new social and property laws were being introduced, agriculture was being optimized and developed. At the same time, the religious situation left much to be desired: against the ten thousand inhabitants who profess Orthodoxy, at least a third of the number were sectarians, and more than half were Muslims and pagans. In such a situation, both the settlers and the spiritual leadership were challenged to equip the church, a parish school and catechesis centers as soon as possible. After a small wooden temple, the villagers decided to build a larger temple that met their needs, including ones that corresponded to material well-being—the village was heavily populated and prosperous enough to afford the largest stone and decorated temple. During the Soviet period, it was closed and abandoned, used mainly for domestic needs, but at the beginning of the 21st century it was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church and is now being actively restored. This historical example clearly demonstrates the importance of preserving the heritage of the church tradition and resuming spiritual life, as the issue of pastoral care and religious education is now as acute in the region as in the past.
