Annotation
Sergey Nikolaevich Durylin (1886–1954) went through life from a student at the barricades in 1905 to a major scholar of philology of the Stalin era. In 1920, he took orders and served in Moscow under the command of the righteous elder Alexy Mechev. He survived arrests and imprisonment. In the Vladimir prison, together with the confessor Bishop Athanasius Kovrovsky, he participated in the preparation of the service to All the saints who shone in the Russian land. At the request of A. V. Lunacharsky, who knew him as a major scientist, he was released on condition not to serve in the Church. He did not serve in the Church, but he served at home, and for the outside world he was only a doctor of philology, a specialist in N. V. Gogol, N. A. Ostrovsky, M. Y. Lermontov, the history of theater and art. His legacy, published after the fall of Soviet power, contains major works about F. M. Dostoevsky, M. V. Nesterov, and remarkable artistic prose. The published memoirs characterize his last years and give an idea of the life of the Orthodox creative intelligentsia in the 40–50s of the twentieth century.
