Annotation

The paper examines two syllabic epitaphs of the beginning of the first third of the 18th century. The first was carved on the tombstone of Vasily Vasilyevich Sheremetev (1691–1729) in the Moscow Epiphany Monastery, the second — on the tomb-stone of Alexander Petrovich Saltykov (1693–1732) in the Anastasiin Epiphany Monastery in Kostroma. The first served as a military judge in the Admiralty, the second was a cavalry officer who participated in many battles of the Northern War. Both epitaphs glorified the military exploits of the addressees. However, the acrostic, which is read by the first letters of the left column of both inscriptions, shows that the epitaph In V. Sheremeteva was borrowed for the tombstone of A. P. Saltykov, shows that the epitaph of V. V. Sheremetev was borrowed for the tombstone of A. P. Saltykov. The article concludes that the borrowing of the epitaph was connected with the system of values of the Russian nobility that developed in the era of Peter the Great
